Try It

If you are looking for feedback about your coaching conversations or are just curious about how your partners are receiving your coaching conversations, this post is an opportunity to try just one new question that could yield incredible findings and strengthen your partnerships.

This tip comes from the great work at Growth Coaching International and a recent presentation at the TLC: Teaching and Learning Conference 2019 by Chris Munro.

At the end of a coaching conversation, ask your partner this one final question, “What was most useful for you today?”

Wait patiently.

Listen actively.

Stay curious.

This question will offer great insight into your exchange with your partner. It makes the conversation personal and signals that this experience was valuable. The question also positions your partner as the decision-maker as they reflect on the conversation. Finally, it provides you with feedback.

Change things up in your coaching. Try this question with a few people over the next few weeks. Reflect on the responses you are receiving and ask yourself a set of reflective questions such as;

  • What story is this information telling me about my conversations?

  • What are my partners finding valuable?

  • How can I create more value for my partners? What are they seeking from our time?

As always, if you try this or have a different approach to the same concept, I would be thrilled to hear about it in the comments below!
